Education Leaders Collaborate at the North American STEM Education Symposium
Intelitek sponsors conference sharing successful STEM education initiatives
Manchester, NH, October 8, 2009
North American STEM Education Symposium (NASES 2009) took place at the Radisson convention center in Manchester, NH, where attendees converged to discuss current initiatives relating to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. Sponsored by the non-profit National STEM Foundation (N-STEM), NASES 2009 brought together academic and industry leaders to successful implementations of STEM in career and technical education. The 2-1/2 day program featured speakers from Leaders from various organizations involved in promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
Featured speaker Dr. Kendall Starkweather, Executive Director of the International Technology Education Association (ITEA), gave an overview of the current state of STEM education in the USA. Vance Ablott, Executive Director of the Triangle Coalition for Science & Technology Education, spoke about initiatives at the Federal level. Joyce Winterton, Assistant Administrator for Education at NASA, spoke about NASA’s unique role in STEM education. Jan Brown, Director of Education Resource Development for USA TODAY, presented an overview of educational programs developed by USAToday. Starkweather , Ablott, Winterton and Brown also participated in roundtable discussions including questions and answers from conference attendees.
Tim Lawrence, Executive director of SkillUSA, also spoke on the subject of employability and technical assessments. Steve Johnson, professional motorcycle and NHRA racer and team owner presented “Technology on the Track”, about his efforts to inspire students to pursue technology careers. Additionally, teachers and administrators shared success stories from high-school and college level STEM programs.
The conference program, along with the enjoyable opportunity to network with peers, successfully enhanced attendees understanding of STEM education, leaving them better prepared to promote more successful STEM programs in the future. Jan Brown from USAToday said this about her experience: “I went not only to share what USA TODAY and NASA are doing in STEM but also to learn as much as I could from others attending the conference. And I did. Understanding the broad context of this field with its focus on engineering has been quite enlightening and will be instrumental as I work with my staff in developing future STEM initiatives.”
